Anna-Maja

Anna-Maja:

‘In my chess career my mother is the most important person for me, she is my coach and accompanies me to almost every competition. My wish is to become World Chess Champion.’

Anna-Maja Kazarian was born on Friday 7 January 2000 in Heerenveen, Friesland, Holland. Christmas is celebrated in Georgia on the same day (Anna-Maja’s family comes from Georgia-Tbilisi).

Anna-Maja has two sisters Teona, Ettie  and a niece, Ani Barbara!

So far Anna-Maja has a life filled with success. At the age of three she could figure skate, and participated in a children beauty contest where she earned the titles Miss Sympatik and Miss Romantika.

At four she taught herself to read and write and skipped a year in elementary school.
Anna-Maja started to play chess when she was six years old. Anna-Maja: ‘When I was 6 years old I spent my holidays in Georgia (August 2006) and my grandfather taught me to play chess.’ In fact her grandfather Kako (Simon) Lomsadze taught her how to play checkers, chess, cards and backgammon in one day. The next day he asks her: ‘Tell me Anna-Maja, which game did you like best?’ She answers: ‘I prefer to play chess.’ From that day on her chess career took off.

To develop her talent she studied chess seriously following the advices of her grandfather. Two weeks before the family returned to Holland they found an article in the local newspaper about a chess player, doctor Revaz (Soso) Topuria who also teaches chess. He began to teach Anna-Maja to play, and discovered her hidden talent.

Back in Holland she joined the Chess Club in Sneek and was accepted at level 2. Anna-Maja played her first chess competition in Waalwijk at the age of seven. A year later Anna-Maja was seven time winner of the Dutch Chess Championship.

Until today Anna-Maja won the Dutch Chess Championship 12 times:
- 8 times in the girls category and
- 4 times in the under  category.

She won 120 cups within 4 years!

An exception.

Anna-Maja has the youngest ever passed for step 6. Anna-Maja is just 10 years.
